learning 101. (2)

Welcome to learning 101.

Do not assume the bigger shop is the better shop

Yesterday my shoe lace broke again. Yeah, they snapped and I kept wondering why my shoe is so loose. It was until I went back after lunch break that I discover it. Thus after work I went to the nearest shoe shop (Bata) to look for the replacements. This was is one of the bigger shops in the chain. Two storeys and pretty big too. I waited for the staff to look for my replacements for 15 mins. They searched the shop with no avail. They just simply cannot locate a pair of black laces for a 6-eye shoe. I am very disappointed with this shop that has no proper inventory control, which in turns delay my time to reach home. However, after reaching home and taken dinner, I went to a neighbourhood shoe shop. Indeed, I found what I want! and they are charging much lesser than what Bata is charging.

For your info:
Bata - > $2.95.
Ordinary shoe shop - > $0.50.

Result:
Extra 15 mins spent in a shop without any desirable outcome.
Reached home 15 mins later.
Savings of $2.45 for not shopping a bigger Bata shop.

Lessons learnt:
Appearance counts when it comes to doing business. But not all good things comes in big packages. Logically, one would expect to find the laces at Bata (bigger shop, more establish). But this time the tables are turned around. So do not always judge the book by it's cover even for small matters.

Learning 101. (1)

I have decided to post things that I have notice here. These are things learnt from daily life and they are minor but worth noticing. This will carry on when ever I have the time to log in and when I remember the stuff. Hope everyone who reads this small blog can get something out of it. Cheers!

Notes:

When you think there is chance to succeed, do go for it.

This happened in the morning when I think I cannot make it in time for the red light. I knew I have about 30 seconds to reach the traffic junction before the "little green man" turns on.I have two choice: think that I could not make it and storll along the pavement while waiting for the next crossing time. Or I can run a bit and make it for this crossing. 30/70 chance. I chose the latter and yes, I made it in time.

Cost: running for 10 seconds.
Result: Made it for the crossing. Got in time for a 3 minutes later train. Reach off 4 minutes late, instead of 10 minutes. A time leverage of 10 secs/6 minutes. Less frustration with waiting. Feeling good. Few drops of sweat.

Outing to the MOS

Yeah, last Saturday was great. I went to MOS (Ministry of Sound) with my best friends. Too bad, Jim was not here as he is off in Vietnam selecting for his wife touring. First time go clubbing with best friends feel great. No limitations, no holding back, can talk, dance and joke all I want. That's the advantage with best friends.

While enjoying ourselves, we have an additional company. A french guy who speaks excellent English. Cool guy and he can drink liquor like it's mineral water. At the mean while, we also got ourselves relaxed and think most enjoy the time there. But seriously i do not know if I have dance badly. Who cares anyway... hehe. Think I have entertained my best friends throughout. :)

Perhaps will visit other clubs next time. MOS is not bad but got to experience life at other places right. Cool cool, time to work again.

New year, new sigh. (part 1)

Year 2007 liao. Time flies. And I am in this god damn job for almost a year.
Well, humans got to learn to be more appreciative right. But i am really sick sick sick of this job.

The colleagues are shit. Or perhaps I don't know how to "treasure" them. But everything got a good side to look at. The good side for me is that I get to know what I don't like. I know I cannot survive well in a place without integrity, a place without motivation.

Now I am in office and I am so bored that I can even log in to here to write a blog. Appreciate or cursed? Perhaps I shall begin with a summary of the my job.

My job: Network designer. I work with a team of 17 people. Most of them are uncles. Yes, they have been faithfully serving my company for more than over 20 years. But my department is newly formed and the job is kinda new to everyone.

I entered the department as the 4th batch of employees. There are 3 other batches before me, which are made up of old staffs. My company organisation is very much like a army hierarchicy. So my post is almost the same as an officer and the older staffs are pretty much like the sergeant majors. I am higher in position but lower in salary scale. This is due to a difference in the education level.

Next, I am going to introduce some people whom I will make reference to.
1) First person, Tweety. He is like the leader among this group of uncles and he looks like Tweety Bird. He is a bird person too.
2) Next, Tortise. I like to call him tortise because he tends to hunch like one.
3) Fat Rat, he works the longest in my company. A whopping 36 years.
4) Mr Dog, he teaches me for the beginning of first 3 mths.
5) Mole, because he looks like one. He likes to hide ard and do the easiest job.
6) Fish, because he everytime go for tea break and his screen saver will show the fishes.
7) Auntie, because she is really an auntie.
8) Baldy, because he is one. Only he lose his hair but also his integrity.
9) Big Cannon Fairy because he tends to fire his cannon regularly.
10) Pushy, because he likes to escape responsibilty.
11) Whiskers, because he has a bushy moustache.
12) Grumpy, because it's him.
13) Missy, because she is the only Miss around.
14) ER, because he always don't want to commit and says errrrrrr.
15) Dreamy, because he always look dreamy and he likes to say huh?
16) Genie, because when arms folded, he looks like the Genie in Aladdin.
17) Worker, because he always work blindly.

I will begin with the big picture. Tweety, tortise and me are suppose to be leading in 3 area of products. Officially, tortise and I are of the same "rank" while Tweety is like the leader of the sergeant majors.

When I first enter the organisation with tortise, we are assign to learn under Tweety. But for no ryhme or reason, I was "given" away to Mr Dog as an apprentice. It seems like Tweety do not like me a lot, which I can feel. This maybe due to the fact that i am local grad and perhaps he has the impression that local grads don't stay long on the job. So maybe he see no point in helping me and he rather be friends with tortise, whom might be able to push him up the little coporate ladder in the future. Tortise on the other hand comes from the neighbouring country with one year of working experience.

Tweety often will mention that I do not have work experience and so on. But I did not do anything against him. Tweety and tortise have plenty to talk abt. This is because Tweety often ask about things on the neighbouring country and tortise always like to boast. Soon Tweety and tortise begin to attack ard me. They start to complain to me about my team and they like to tell me old stories. I really hate the way they talk to me. I have been through shit before and I know one when I encounter it. They are like shit. Trust me.

Tortise on the other hand like to make small reports to the director and after that he will sort of summaries his reports to Tweety and me. I do not know how much is kept beyond my ears.

At the meanwhile I learn all I could from Mr Dog. Dog is a friendly person but his problem is he don't listen well. He will take a longer time to accept what other says and learn from it. At times, when I could not convince him, I will let him find out the truth on his own. Sometimes no use explaining so much right? But often, once he understands, he will be able to remember it. I have learn much from him and he could be consider as my mentor.
